Honda Likely To Introduce New 500cc Retro Motorcycle Soon

Honda recently introduced the GB 350 S for the European market. The retro motorcycle, a derivative of the CB350 sold in India, debuted at EICMA 2024. Soon afterwards, the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer trademarked the GB500 name for motorcycles and motorcycle parts in the USA and Europe at their respective trademark registering agencies. Though not confirmed, this could hint at the brand looking to introduce a new 500cc retro motorcycle in these regions soon.

Honda used to sell the GB500 retro model between the late 1980s and early 1990s. It was powered by an air-cooled, single-cylinder engine that developed 38 hp. If Honda decides to bring back the GB500 moniker, it is unlikely to give it a single-cylinder engine. It could either feature an all-new twin-cylinder 500cc motor, featuring water-cooling, or Honda could look at cost-effectiveness and use its existing 471cc inline two-cylinder unit.

Honda's current 471cc inline-two water-cooled engine produces 47 hp. The brand uses it in its international models, such as the CBR500, the CB500F, and the Rebel 500 Cruiser. The NX500, which is on sale in India, also uses this engine. If Honda introduces a new 500cc retro motorcycle, it will likely make its way to India. It would make a decent alternative in the middleweight category, which is currently ruled by the 650cc twin-cylinder retro-models from Royal Enfield.
